Off Grid and On Grid Solar System – A Beginner’s Guide

Welcome to my blog. I am Dipankar Mandal, in today’s article I will discuss with you about solar systems, what are the types of solar systems and how does it work? what is Off Grid and On Grid Solar System? So let’s start today’s article.

What is a solar system?

The method of generating electricity from sunlight is called a solar system. This solar system consists of solar panels, when the sun shines on the panels, the panels generate DC electricity. With that electricity, we charge the battery in our house through a charge controller. If we have any DC equipment from that battery then we can run that equipment. Or we can run our home equipment by converting DC from that battery to AC with the help of an inverter.

The electricity generated by this solar system is completely free. But it has some conditions, like the power that solar will generate will depend on your weather and your sunlight. If you have more sunlight you will generate more electricity and less sunlight will generate less electricity.

But before installing this solar system, you need to know what are the types of solar system installation. There are three types of solar system installation. One is on grid, the other is off grid. Another is the hybrid system.

On-Grid Solar System

Before knowing this on-grid system, we need to know what the grid is. If we visualize the transmission and generation of electricity we can see. The different generation plants that produce electricity are far away and the power that we consume is also many kilometers away from the generating station. So bringing this consumer and this station into a network is the work of the Grid system. The big towers that we see through which high voltage current flows, those towers are basically called Grid system.

Through this grid system, we supply and distribute the electricity of the entire country. So we understand what the Grid system is.

What is the on-grid system of the solar system? The one grid system is – you install solar panels, and after installation, you get the DC output from that solar, bring that output, and give it to an inverter. From that inverter, you will use the amount of electricity you need in your home or yourself.

And the excess electricity you will supply to the grid system with the help of net metering. That is, the excess electricity you generate will be supplied to the grid during the day, which we call net metering. So we understand how the ongrid system works.

That is, you will install your solar system in an on-grid system and you will use the electricity from the inverter that you have. And the excess electricity you will supply to the grid during the day. This provision is called net metering.

That means your meter will turn to a minus position or negative position. And when it’s night, you take your electricity from that grid, and you use it. The meter will then rotate back to the forward position.

On-Grid Solar System Advantage

The advantage of this ongrid system is that you can sell the electricity and another advantage is that you don’t have to invest in batteries for storage. But if you want to install an on-grid system, your solar capacity will be much higher. If we are normal consumers, that means we think of doing this system in the case of a normal house, in that case, we should not do this system.

Off-grid Solar System

The normal system in which we install solar is called an off-grid system. In this off-grid system, there will be no connection of solar to the grid. That is, if you have surplus electricity, you cannot supply that electricity to the grid.

In this system, you charge the battery through charge control by bringing the amount of electricity generated by your solar panel. And from that battery, you will use that electricity in the equipment you have with the help of an inverter. In this off-grid system, you will need a battery. Without batteries, there will never be an off-grid system.

Off-grid Solar System Advantage

The solar systems we normally do are usually off-grid systems. And the advantage of this is that if your electricity goes out during the day or if the sunlight is low or there is no sunlight, you can run from the battery and you can get back up from this battery for a long time at night.

On the other hand, in an on-grid system, when your electricity goes out, you will not get output from the solar system even during the day. If we compare from that point of view then if we have a normal house we can do this off-grid system.

Hybrid Solar System

This hybrid system has been created by combining on-grid and off-grid systems. In this hybrid system, you will bring the amount of electricity that will be generated from your solar, and you will charge the battery from that electricity through your inverter. And run the loads you have from that inverter.

If you have excess electricity then you can supply that electricity to the grid. And when you need it, you can take that electricity from the grid and run it yourself.

Hybrid Solar System Advantage

The advantage of this hybrid system is that you have battery storage. If for some reason your solar output stops or there is no sunlight or cloudy days during the day, you get backup from that battery. Again, if your battery backup runs out, you can supply power from the grid.

The inverters of this hybrid system are of a large type. That is, its KV is slightly higher and with this hybrid system, we can run fans, motors, fridges, TV all.

Those who have a little more budget or want to spend a little more, they must definitely do this hybrid system without going off-grid.

Conclusion

So we understand from this post that our solar system is of three types. One is on-grid, another is off-grid, and the other is hybrid. So now which consumer, which solar system to install?

Only those who want to sell electricity or do business with electricity will set up this on grid system. Those who have a very large factory or industry where a lot of electricity is required during the day will install this system.

Those who need a small solar system for their home or office will install this off-grid system. So if your power goes out during the day you get backup from the battery and back up from the battery at night too. Some modern types of inverters are available for these off-grid systems, which do not require a charge controller.

It will automatically run from solar during the day and from your main line at night. So you will try to use those modern inverters in this off-grid system.

Those who have a little more budget and have a resort or commercial building or corporate office and you want electricity all the time can install this hybrid system. Then their electricity bill will be much less. Because we know that our commercial sector has the highest electricity bill rates.

If your monthly electricity bill is 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh, you can save electricity bill. Again when you need to run from backup means from battery then you will run from battery. So in that case you will try to establish this hybrid system.

So we know how many types of these solar systems are and what they are. Now a question everyone asks that we will benefit by doing this solar system. Yes you will definitely benefit from solar system. In that case you should always remember one thing. That is the quality solar panel you need to install. But if you don’t install quality full solar panels then you won’t get any more output after 2-3 years.

So try to use the branded and quality solar panels in the market. And to use those inverters that have complete quality. Then you will benefit from installing solar panels or solar systems. And otherwise if you do solar system with normal panel or normal inverter then your money will go completely down the drain. That means no output will come from that money.
